Resolution Revolution!

If you have approached the New Year with a certain degree of trepidation because you have set yourself a laundry list of resolutions to stick to, know that there are millions of people just like you, feeling your pain.

Are resolutions worth making? Is there any point when most observations tell us that over 80% of us fail and give up on them within the first six weeks of January 1st?

Interesting that we are writing about this topic now. Right about the point in the year when most people do give up the ghost and drop the ball on their steadfast resolutions.

For starters, if you are making the same resolutions every year, what are you expecting to be different about this round?

We Aren’t All Doomed To Fail

What if there was a way to improve your odds of success?

We’re going to take a look at the pros and cons of making resolutions for yourself and how you could self-reflect, create a starting line, and align yourself mentally for self-improvement.

Sometimes the simple act of switching up your daily routine can get you into the headspace that will allow you to make better choices. Whether that is through meditation, exercise, hypnotherapy, or affirmations the attitude is the fire starter that will get you to initiate change.

The real trick is sticking with it.

Pros of Setting Resolutions

While they may not be for everyone, there are some pros that go with setting up some revolutions.

It’s a Fresh Start

New Year, new you. Most of us have friends that are so enthusiastic about making resolutions it can be hard not to get swept up in it too. Planning for a new beginning can feel optimistic, full of positivity. But that doesn’t mean it needs to be planned around the New Year alone. Fresh starts can happen at any time of year.

Self-Awareness

Taking time to reflect on where we are in life right now can be an enlightening space to be in, especially if you are very much not where you want to be or thought you might be. If there are some real changes to be made then acknowledging them is the first step. And if you activate them appropriately with the right mindset and even share them with friends and family it will make you more accountable.

Cons of Setting Resolutions

If you aren’t the type of person who naturally works well towards deadlines, they might not be for you. Here are some of the pitfalls to avoid and why.

By Making Them Unrealistic You’re Setting Up For Failure

Deciding that you want to lose 50 pounds is a lot harder to imagine than losing 5. Breaking down larger goals into smaller more achievable ones provides you with the baby steps you need for positive reinforcement and increase the likelihood you will keep going. If you find self-doubt creeping in hypnotherapy can be a highly effective way to reset your mindset and stay on track. The power of subconscious suggestion can aid with many types of resolutions where getting the ball rolling can be tricky.

Procrastination

Need to eat healthier to get into shape? Want to quit smoking? If you do and it’s July, don’t tell yourself you’re waiting for New Year to begin! There is no need to use New Year as a time-honoured marker or a starting gun. When we postpone life choices and actions that we want to make it has a strange way of holding onto that non-momentum so that we may never start. And life change demands that we take action if we expect anything to move towards our dreams and goals. Daydreaming doesn’t put that book you planned on writing in your lap unless you start using the keyboard.

Sometimes You Need Help or a Push

If working out makes you roll your eyes in the morning or you can find excuses to ‘not have the time today’ perhaps partnering up with someone like-minded will help you bypass avoidance mechanisms. It could be that you need to utilise tools that help you steer your choices towards positive ones and add motivation when it feels like your willpower is flagging. Mindsets are a powerful thing! What happens when you need that extra help to push on?

One very effective and resourceful method to reinforce your intentions is hypnotherapy. It’s amazing what even just a few sessions with a well-researched and compatible hypnotherapist can do to help you on your journey to an improved life.
