Many of my clients are surprised to learn that Hypnosis is a common state of mind, that they will have experienced drifting in and out of on a regular basis.
If they have ever got lost in thought or engrossed in a good book or a great movie, I explain that they have experienced a form of hypnosis.
You actually go in and out of different states of trance on a regular basis every time you miss an
exit on the motorway (highway hypnosis) or get lost in thought or reverie. Anything that causes your mind to wander stimulates your imagination and creates a suggestible state: all of which could be classified as a form of hypnosis.
The unconscious mind is like a pre-programmed car on autopilot. It will take the familiar road,
whether you want to go there or not. It has no ability to steer itself in a new direction because it
follows whatever is programmed into it over time.
When it really comes down to it, hypnosis is merely a form of focused concentration, plain and
simple.
The conscious mind is the tip of the iceberg per se because it can only retain a small amount of
information at any one time.
The unconscious or subconscious mind is where most of our information is stored and that
information guides our lives. All of those little thoughts you think about and repeat day and in
and day out rule your life. Your thoughts become things so it pays to think positive and only say good things to yourself.
Many of us dwell on those things that aggravate or annoy us. If we focus on negativity we create a negative world to live in. If we continually tell ourselves that we are unsuccessful, lazy or unmotivated to eat healthy, then that is what continues to manifest in our life.
Hypnosis has been around for thousands of years dating as far back as Ancient Egypt. It has
nothing to do with the occult and everything to do with the power of the mind.
The conscious and unconscious mind, are two very different things. Hypnosis is an absolutely incredible and amazing way to make changes in your life and it is a very simple
process.
Hypnosis changes your thinking and your thought processes at a very deep level of the
mind, allowing you to easily and effortlessly make changes.
Your life is a self-fulfilling prophecy because whatever you continually dwell on or think about
comes about.
Self-hypnosis is a tool that gives you access into the unconscious mind, where change is more easily made. It's really as simple as that. If you want to change something in your life, all you really need to do is programme in new thoughts.
The conscious mind is like the gatekeeper. It does not like change. It likes things to stay the same
all of the time. It is very difficult to make changes using only the conscious mind because you are
attempting to change thought patterns and processes that have been in place for many years.
The unconscious mind is like a sponge, absorbing most everything it comes in contact with. The
unconscious mind simply records and plays back all of those experiences you have had in your
life.
If someone told you as a young child that you were fat and ugly, then a part you still retain
that information. If you have always struggled with confidence or weight management, you may
still struggle with it today because your mind continues to replay old outdated thoughts.
Sigmund Freud, although he certainly did not invent the idea of the conscious versus the
unconscious mind, did make it very popular and better known. Freud compared the mind to an
iceberg in the fact that the conscious mind only represents the very tip of the iceberg.
The unconscious mind or that which lies below our conscious thoughts stores a much vaster
amount of information. He believed that while we are fully aware of what is going on in the
conscious mind, most of us have little to no idea of what kind of information is stored in the
unconscious mind.
In a state of trance clinical hypnotherapists seek to reprogram your unconscious mind to accept new habits and behaviours, by re-inforcing this with self hypnosis, waking affirmations and a positive goal, fantastic changes can be made.
To quote a recent client; I did the breathing and wall exercises you advised before bed and was out like a light and didn't wake up till 6am. Had a really productive day got loads done can't remember a day like it in along time .
